Raul Rodriguez and his crew work a tree from the top down. Bucket truck and climbers take the canopy apart, the chipper handles the limbs, and the grinder finishes at ground level. Three jobs make up most of the calendar.

Tree removal, shrubs and lot clearing

Whole trees, juniper and arborvitae rows, hedges and overgrown lots. Roots lifting concrete, a trunk too close to the house, branches over the power lines: those are the usual reasons people call.

Before quoting, Raul looks at the tree, what stands around it, and what you want done with the wood and the stump. The crew can cut it into firewood or haul it off.

Proper pruning

Structural, ornamental and fruit tree pruning for safety, health and shape. Timing depends on the species. Deciduous trees usually go in late winter or early spring while they're dormant, and flowering trees right after they bloom.

The crew climbs spikeless whenever possible, so the trunk isn't wounded while it's being inspected or pruned.

Stump grinding

Stumps get in the way of mowing, landscaping and new planting. Big R grinds them below the surface so they don't come back, then cleans up the chips.
